Christmas 2008

"How silently, how silently, the wondrous Gift is giv’n;
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His Heav’n."

Greetings to our Family and Friends,
This Christmas Day we will remember Jesus birth and then hit the slopes to enjoy our winter wonderland. The day after Christmas, Britta's folks and two sisters and a brother will come out to visit for the weekend. We'll take them up to the mountains for some snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowtubing. It should be fun!

Fun Facts

Yes, Britta's hair is still long. She is a little surprised by this too. Her hair also returned to the curliness she had in her youth.

Employment

Ryan is now in his 6th year at CSS. He has been very involved on some important projects and has grown in his experience and leadership at the company. He is lead engineer on a big project in the company.

Britta had a busy year at Wheat Ridge 2020. The highlights include business loans for dramatic improvements that look great on 38th Avenue, a fun Wines & Dines event, and being named Interim Co-Director last month. Budget cuts make it a more difficult time to take on this role, but there are still many opportunities for Wheat Ridge 2020's mission in the community.

We both feel very fortunate to be employed.

Travels

This fall we took a 12-day trip to visit Ryan's family in New York and to explore New England.  We spent several days with Ryan's parents and finally got to see their Amish Country Store and Guided Tours business. After hanging around with family for a week, we headed north up to Maine. Ryan was born in Maine and wanted to get a chance to see his home state. We found the farm where the Fisher's lived back then, and also spent some time in Acadia National Park. We stopped at lots of lighthouses and had our share of seafood on the way down the coast to Boston.
We put 2200 miles on a little Kia in 7 days exploring New England. Other highlights included the Flume Gorge and White Mountains in New Hampshire, a chartered flight over Acadia, Robert's Maine Grill in Kittery, ME, (best seafood ever!) and watching dejected Red Sox fans come out of Fenway Park after a loss.

We also enjoy living in a beautiful state. We explore Colorado whenever possible. Some have asked how we've been able to find such great spots. We've enjoyed a John Fielder book that shows us exactly where to find many hidden treasures and a 4x4 trail book that has led us over many passes in our Jeep.

Family and Friends

We made the trek to MN three times this year. We had big family celebrations. We went back once for Briana's bridal shower and then again for her wedding to Josh Miller in August. Ryan was best man in his brother Jared's wedding to Teea. Both events were festive and full of friends, family and fun!

Britta decided to drive across Nebraska a couple more times for college suitemate Becca's wedding. It was more time in the car than in Iowa, but it was fun to catch up with college friends.

Britta's brother Garrett came out for a visit over spring break and fell in love with snowboarding. Long-time friend Connie Rasmussen came for a visit in November. Several others have stopped by on their way through. We're just off the interstate so give us a call if you are coming through Colorado.

Facebook has been a fun and fascinating part of our lives as we discover old friends and reconnect.  Ryan has enjoyed catching up with friends from college and mission trips and Britta was delighted that an impromptu Ambie (4-H Ambassadors) reunion was able to come together on the way to one of the weddings.

Community Leadership

Britta has volunteered for several years and served as Chair of the Colorado Housing Investment Fund Coalition. She helped launch a state issues committee to put the Coalition proposal to dedicate revenue for affordable housing on the ballot. After a lot of work and collecting a lot of signatures, the group decided it was going to run out of time and money on an already crowded ballot. That decision seemed wise when almost all ballot initiatives were defeated in Colorado. After several years as Chair, Britta has stepped down to spend some time on other issues.

Britta also got some municipal level issue committee experience running a trio of local initiatives. She was bummed when the charter change they were proposing lost by 388 votes (out of 13,000+).

Britta is a supporter of The White House Project which encourages women to vote, run and lead. She is a founding member of their Colorado Leadership Council.

Ryan and Britta both graduated from the Wheat Ridge Civic Academy and are prepared to be even better citizens.

Playing

This year Ryan planned a two-day bike ride up in the mountains. It was a very fun 100-mile ride from Glenwood Canyon to Hotchkiss. Highlights included the bike path through the scenic Glenwood Canyon, and the tough ride up McClure Pass. Ryan is already starting to think about fun rides for next year. While Ryan was riding, Britta was having fun on some Jeep roads. It was Britta in the support vehicle who had the only flat tire of the trip.

We took a trip to SW Colorado and saw the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde and the ancient dwellings at Hovenweep and Canyon of the Ancients. We also spent some time in Telluride and Durango.  It's a beautiful part of Colorado we don't visit often enough.

For fun, Britta keeps busy with the Drinking Club with a Book Problem and started a social drinking group for young housing professionals. We joined a co-ed kickball league and dodgeball league and have had a blast. Britta played on the winning women's best foursome at the West Chamber Golf Tournament in August.

Colorado is a great place to visit.  We are pretty familiar with all parts of the state and  happy to assist in making recommendations for sites and experiences.  We'd love to see you.

We have enjoyed hearing from friends and family and celebrating weddings and babies. We feel blessed with health, family, friends and adventures. We hope that this season finds you enjoying many blessings as well.

Merry Christmas!
